--- { "title": "Tables", "intro": "Learn how to organize information in rows and columns." } --- # When to use Tables in Workflowy let you turn any node into a grid of rows and columns. This is useful for comparing options, tracking project details, planning content, or keeping a lightweight database. Each cell is still a Workflowy node, so it can include notes, dates, files, mirrors, nested bullets, and anything else you normally add to a node. Use a table when the relationship between fields matters, but you still want Workflowy's flexible outline underneath. {% video src="/media/whats-new/tables.mp4" %}{% /video %} # Create a table You can turn any node into a table. The first level of nesting becomes rows. The second level of nesting becomes cells. The first row becomes the column headers. You can create a table using the node menu, the layout option in the menu bar, or ***/table*** in the slash menu. The steps below are for the node menu. {% steps %} 1. Open the bullet menu for the node you want to turn into a table 2. Click on '**Bullets**' in the bullet menu 3. Click on '**Table**' {% /steps %} # Add rows You add new rows by clicking the plus icon below the table or by pressing `Enter` while editing a cell. {% steps %} 1. Navigate to the bottom of the table 2. Click the plus icon 3. Type into the first cell of the new row {% /steps %} # Add columns You add new columns from the right side of the header row. The new column will be added to every row in the table. {% steps %} 1. Navigate to the right-hand side of the header row 2. Click the plus icon 3. Type the new column name in the header cell {% /steps %} # Edit cells Click any cell and start typing. You can use `Tab` to move to the next cell, `Shift` + `Tab` to move to the previous cell, and the arrow keys to move between nearby cells. Cells can also contain nested nodes, but they are not editable directly in the table. You can see if a cell contains a nested node, because it will have a border to the left of the cell. # Move rows Rows have a handle on the left side of the table. You can move data rows up or down, while the header row stays at the top. {% steps %} 1. Mouse over the row you want to move - the row handle will appear on the left 2. Click and drag the handle up or down 3. Let go when the row is in the right location {% /steps %} # Move columns Columns are moved from the header row. When you move a header cell, the matching cells in every row move with it. {% steps %} 1. Mouse over the header cell you want to move - the bullet point will appear 2. Click and drag the bullet point left or right until a vertical line appears 3. Let go of the bullet point {% /steps %} # Resize columns On desktop, you can resize columns from the header row to better fit the content. {% steps %} 1. Move your mouse over the line between two header cells 2. Click and drag the resize handle to the desired width 3. Let go when the column is the right size {% /steps %} # Duplicate or delete columns You can duplicate a column from any cell in that column. To delete a column, open the menu for that column's header cell. {% steps %} 1. Open the bullet menu for a cell in the column 2. Click '**Duplicate column**' to make a copy of the column 3. Or open the header cell menu and click '**Delete column**' to remove the column {% /steps %} If selected cells contain nested nodes, Workflowy will ask you to confirm before deleting them.
