Adding content

Press Enter to create a new node at the same level, and Tab to indent it as a child of the one above. That's the core of it.

For everything else, Workflowy supports pasting markdown, plain text, and formatted HTML, so you can bring content in from other tools without much cleanup. You can also drag and drop images directly into the document.

When you're away from your desk, the mobile apps (iOS and Android) let you capture quickly. Quick Add gives you a shortcut to drop something into Workflowy without opening the full app, and Share To works from other apps on your phone so you can send anything to Workflowy in a couple of taps.

Notes

Every node has a note field beneath it. Press Shift+Enter to focus on it. It's a good place for supporting detail, context, or anything that belongs with an item but would clutter the main outline view if it were a bullet in its own right.

Editing

Click any node to place your cursor and start typing. Everything edits inline. Ctrl/Cmd+Z to undo, Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z to redo.

Formatting text

The usual shortcuts work: Ctrl/Cmd+B for bold, Ctrl/Cmd+I for italic. You can also apply colours, highlights, and underlines from the formatting toolbar, which appears when you select text.

Workflowy supports Markdown shortcuts as you type. Use # for headings, --- for dividers, - [ ] for checkboxes, and #qq backtick fences for code blocks.

Node types

Beyond text formatting, you can change the style of a node itself: headings, paragraphs, and quotes give you pre-set styles for structuring longer content. These are covered in more detail in Change node types.

Tip: The note field is also useful for metadata. If you're using a node as a project, the note is a natural place to put a description, a link, or a due date.
