Bullet list

Create flexible, infinitely nested lists for notes, tasks, ideas, and projects.

Bullets are the default node type in Workflowy. Each bullet can contain text, a note, and any number of nested bullets, so a simple list can grow into a detailed outline without requiring folders or separate documents.

Create a bullet

Press Enter at the end of a bullet to create another one. You can also use the New node button in the sidebar or the plus button in the app.

  1. Place the cursor at the end of a bullet
  2. Press Enter
  3. Start typing

Nest bullets

Indent a bullet beneath the one above it to make it a child. The bullet above becomes its parent, and everything nested beneath that parent becomes part of the same branch.

Press Tab to indent a bullet and Shift+Tab to outdent it. You can nest bullets to as many levels as you need.

Move a bullet

Drag a bullet to move it somewhere else in your outline. Any bullets nested beneath it move with it.

  1. Select and hold the bullet
  2. Drag it to the new location
  3. Release it when the placement indicator is in the position you want

You can also run /move to to search for a destination.

Expand and collapse a list

Select the triangle beside a bullet to show or hide its children. Double-click the triangle to expand or collapse everything nested beneath that bullet.

For more ways to focus on part of your outline, see Navigate around.

Change another node back to a bullet

Open the node menu and choose Bullets, or run /bullets, to restore the default bullet type. The node's content and nested children remain in place.
