Web Clipper

Save pages and selections from your browser into Workflowy.

Workflowy Web Clipper lets you save pages, links, and highlighted text to Workflowy with a single click or a keyboard shortcut. You can send clips directly to a destination, place them at your current Workflowy cursor, or copy them for manual pasting.

Install the official extension

Configure the Web Clipper

To open the Web Clipper settings, right-click its icon in your browser toolbar and select Options. The settings include explanations and examples for each feature.

Connect your Workflowy account

Some of the Web Clipper options require a Workflowy API key. To get one:

  1. Right-click on the Web Clipper button in your browser toolbar, and choose 'Options'
  2. Select 'Get a token' to view the Workflowy API Key page.
  3. Generate an API key if you do not already have one.
  4. Copy the key and save it in the extension.

Treat your API key like a password. It allows the extension to read and create content in your Workflowy account. To disconnect the extension, delete or regenerate the key on the API key page.

Using the Web Clipper

Choose where clips go

The extension provides three clipping modes:

  • Destination — Send clips directly to Inbox, Home, or a node with a Jump To shortcut. Choose a default destination for one-click clipping, or use the right-click menu to pick another. Requires an API key.
  • Cursor — Insert the clip at your cursor in an open Workflowy browser tab. Requires an API key.
  • Clipboard — Copy the clip as OPML, then paste it into Workflowy yourself. No API key required.

Clip a page or selection

Open the extension while viewing a page to save its title and URL. Select text first to include it in the clip.

You can also right-click a page or selection. The Clip to Workflowy menu provides access to recent and saved destinations, Cursor mode, and Clipboard mode without opening the extension.

Choose a clip format

The extension can structure the page title, link, and selected text in three ways:

  • Named — Make the page title the linked item and place selected text in its note.
  • Bullets — Put the title, URL, and selected paragraphs into nested items.
  • Mixed — Keep the title as the item, the URL in its note, and selected paragraphs as children.

Keyboard shortcuts

The extension provides commands for clipping to your default destination, clipping at the cursor, copying to the clipboard, and repeating the last action. Open your browser's extension keyboard-shortcut settings to view or change the assigned keys.

Troubleshooting

  • Invalid API token: Delete or regenerate your key at workflowy.com/api-key, then connect the extension again.
  • A destination is missing: Create or update the destination as a Workflowy Shortcut, then refresh the extension.
  • Cursor clipping is unavailable: Open Workflowy in a browser tab and place the cursor in the destination item.
  • The clip was copied but not inserted: Clipboard mode requires you to paste into Workflowy manually.
