Workflowy Local MCP app
Run an open-source local MCP app with fast search, multiple accounts, backups, and support for several AI clients.
Workflowy Local MCP is a separate desktop app that connects external AI tools to your Workflowy account. It keeps a local SQLite cache for fast full-text search and gives MCP clients tools for reading and updating your outline.
When to use it
Choose the Local MCP app when you want:
- Fast search across a large Workflowy account
- A local cache and local full-account backups
- Multiple Workflowy accounts
- Bookmarks and persistent AI instructions
- Setup instructions for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients
If you want the simplest external connection and do not need these features, use Workflowy Desktop MCP instead.
What you need
- A Workflowy API key from workflowy.com/api-key
- The latest app for macOS, Windows, or Linux from GitHub Releases
- An AI tool that supports MCP
How to connect
- Download the release for your operating system.
- Install and open Workflowy Local MCP.
- Add and validate your Workflowy API key.
- Open the Setup tab and choose your MCP client.
- Copy the configuration into your AI tool.
- Restart the AI tool if it does not show the Workflowy tools immediately.
Local data and security
The app stores its configuration, cache, bookmarks, logs, and backups on your computer. Your Workflowy API key does not need to leave your machine, but the external AI provider you connect may receive the Workflowy content used in a conversation.
Keep your API key private and review the privacy policy of the AI tool you connect.

The source code, release notes, and issue tracker are in the Workflowy Local MCP GitHub repository.
